Can you tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Joseph Wendrich. I was born in Llanelli, South Wales, and after graduating from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, I’m now working as an actor in Los Angeles. I’ve been fortunate enough to have worked with many leading professionals within the industry, and have starred in multiple projects such as mini-series, features, and shorts films. I am a huge fan of fantasy and sci-fi, as well as action and drama, and my background in martial arts has been of huge benefit in my roles within these genres. When I’m not acting you’ll probably find me in the gym, hiking, or enjoying a (hot) black coffee at one of LA’s many coffee spots.
What made you choose acting?
The lifestyle is part of what drew me into acting. I find the unpredictability and adventure thrilling and liberating, as well as the process of collaborating on something bigger than all of us involved, and bringing a story from nothing out into the world. As an actor I get to have a taste of lives that I would never live, and get a glimpse into what the world has given to others, more or less fortunate than I. It is this exploration of life that interests me, in all its forms such as the travelling, collaboration and character work, all of which goes into the project that reflects it.
Do you have any advice for artists trying to make it in LA?
I think if you love what you do and you are dedicated to your craft, you will find success. LA isn’t a city to live in for its pretty sights or magical atmosphere. It’s a city that can offer a lot to those who are creative and dedicated, and have a will to succeed. My advice to artists is to be original. Be authentic to yourself and don’t sell out to what’s popular or trending, as I believe that chasing popularity isn’t a strong enough foundation to build a lasting career on, but finding your audience through your own authentic art and building from there will bring you success and surround you with likeminded people.
Do you have any upcoming projects?
I am currently in the post production stage of a short film My Sweet Frankenstein, a romantic tale in an animated style, but shot in live action. Its sequence of intriguing montages and captivating soundtrack threads the story of Dracula, who is living a reclusive life after many long years of pain, both caused by and inflicted on her. Her determined reluctance to engage with the world is shattered when she meets Frankenstein, a strange man with no understanding of the world he is in. Together they search for purpose, excitement, and peace, through a short journey of a lifetime. This production has been particularly interesting for me as I co-wrote, directed, and co-starred in it. As a result I have been involved in the process from beginning to end which has been an incredibly eye-opening experience, and I look forward to its screening in the film festival circuit. I have also recently wrapped a mini-series which I starred in, Tangled Ties and Tipsi Vows, which is now available to stream on Sereal Plus.
